BaxEnergy is selected to realize the first large-scale Monitoring & Control Room of South Africa

Johannesburg/South Africa, October 2016: BaxEnergy and Enel Green Power are shaping together a greener future for the African continent with the realization of a Monitoring & Control room in South Africa which will be single responsible for managing 1,2 GW of solar and wind power plants.

South Africa is one of the richest countries in the world when it comes to renewable potential, from the blustery Atlantic Coast around Cape Town to the sun-drenched stretches of the Kalahari Desert. With the growth of renewables in the country’s energy consumption as main imperative, South Africa’s clean energy transition is moving at a very high speed. The government aims to reduce the share of fossil fuels in the energy mix to 57% by 2030, with renewables set to fill 21% of the energy generation gap, reaching the ambitious target of 17,8 GW by 2030.

South Africa represents a dynamic and fruitful energy market where Enel’s subsidiary Enel Green Power RSA (Republic of South Africa) is dedicated to the development of wind and solar photovoltaic projects for respectively 902 MW and 323,5 MW of total installed capacity: “The South African energy market is on the point of a very interesting evolution and we are developing an increasingly integrated presence in the country”, said Lamberto Dai Pra’, Enel’s Country Manager in South Africa.

To respond to the increasing demands of the African Government, BaxEnergy has recently opened a branch office in the city of Johannesburg, for closely caring this fast growing emerging market.

Enel Green Power RSA has entrusted BaxEnergy with its turn-key solution Energy Studio Pro® to monitor and control the mixed portfolio of power plants across South Africa. By March 2016, BaxEnergy has started the operations to deploy the first large scale local control room (LCR), located in EGP RSA Data-Center in Johannesburg, for ensuring a complete and independent data collection, storage and analysis. With its fully configurable modules, Energy Studio Pro® is going to become a valuable team member of EGP RSA allowing the company to satisfy multiple needs. Among the several benefits, one of the most important is the access to real-time status of power production in each power plant to fulfill the energy demand of the South African electricity transmission operator, Eskom. In addition, thanks to Energy Studio Pro® power forecast tool, EGP RSA will be able to perform advanced analysis and get automatic report on a daily basis for the following 24 hours and week-ahead for each hour time-period.

All in all, BaxEnergy’s innovative solution will make easier the daily job of EGP RSA personnel by providing them the latest cutting-edge technologies to supervise all the power plants or single devices in a transparent and user-friendly way, gaining immediate information about their performance with a clear and intuitive visualization and remote control.

By looking at the near future, both Enel Green Power and BaxEnergy aims not only to reinforce their collaboration but also to increase their presence in the Country, and EGP has already set the goal to put in execution five new wind farms for a total of 705 MW in 2017.

If innovation without borders is the future, innovation powered by green energy sets the stage for a sustainable and lasting development: BaxEnergy and Enel Green Power RSA are already working on this direction, shaping together a greener future for the African Continent.
