BaxEnergy & RES4Africa: Partnering for Sustainable Development

Rome, February 25th 2020. BaxEnergy and RES4Africa have officially formalized their cooperation with the purpose to create an enabling environment for renewable energy investments in African countries. The synergy will provide joint efforts in the production and development of sustainable energy, while creating shared value which is beneficial for local communities.

Africa is the second-largest and second-populous continent. It covers one fifth of the total land-surface of earth. From the ground to the highest mountains, Africa offers a rich variety of renewable energy sources, spanning from hydro, solar and wind. The current population of Africa is more than 1 million people and is expected to grow in the upcoming years, inevitably influencing energy demands.  Half of African population still has no access to electricity.

RES4Africa was founded in 2019 after transitioning from FoundeRES4Med&Africa. The latter aimed at creating a network and collaboration among industries, agencies, technical services and institutes in order to develop clean energy solutions in Africa.

Specifically, RES4Africa’s mission is to increase the speed of renewable energy development in Africa, by drawing inspiration from the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which sets out 17 Sustainable Development Goals. With particular reference to Sustainable Development Goal 7, which defines the objective to “ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all”, thus recognizing the importance of power availability, making it a central point in its strategy.

Through the partnership, BaxEnergy is determined to support RES4Africa by providing more than 10 years of experience in developing turnkey solutions for industrial data collection and analysis, along with its knowledge in monitoring renewable power plants production cycle. The newborn partnership sets a common goal: increasing the share of renewable energy and supporting the expansion of infrastructure and cutting-edge technology in order to supply modern and sustainable energy services. Development and sustainability are just blueprints; to turn them into reality the joint effort of governments, stakeholders and partners is needed. BaxEnergy takes part in it by affirming the importance of energy not only as a commodity, but as a key-catalyst for sustainable growth.

“We strongly believe in the potential of renewable energies because they’re resources available to everyone and precious for global socio-economic and technological development. A territory of such vast size and population as Africa is, must have access to these resources which should be equally and democratically distributed. The only way for the African continent to grow is to support the use and development of renewables. Our mission is not just to meet the primary needs of the continent, reaching an equal development as other countries, but also to provide solutions to make the use of renewable energy easier, affordable, efficient and secure.”

Making two out of one

Intro to cogeneration

Among the most used low environmental impact technologies, cogeneration has undoubtedly taken a relevant place in the energy industry. Although they fall outside the field of renewables, cogeneration systems, also called Combined Heat and Power (CHP), are raising great interest in the perspective of environmental safeguard.

Co-generating literally means producing two or more forms of energy, usually electric and thermal energy from a single energy source. Cogeneration systems are also called Combined Heat and Power, from which the acronym CHP derives.

Electricity and heat

Electricity and heat are usually produced separately. As a matter of fact, electric energy is generated by thermoelectric power plants, which disperse heat in the environment during the cycle of production. On the other hand, thermal energy is provided by furnaces which convert fuels into heat. More specifically, electricity is produced by thermic engine plants in which heat, through a thermodynamic cycle, is converted first into mechanical energy and then into electrical energy throughout electric generators. In this transformation process, heat is not entirely transformed into “work”, a part is discharged. It is precisely this portion of heat that is not exploited to be regained through cogeneration.

Advantages of cogeneration. Image courtesy of Inoplex.

A brief history of cogeneration

Historically, during the early decades of the 21st century, cogeneration was broadly used among small and large industries because of shortage of available resources. With the expansion of large electric power plants and the subsequent development of more reliable stations and distribution systems, industries began to consider buying electricity as more cost-effective, thus only focusing on producing heat.

In the recent years, some factors such as the increase in power costs, economic expansion, global competition and environmental concerns represent the major reasons for industries to turn to cogeneration again.

CHP systems can be powered using several kinds of primary energy: through fossil-delivered material such as natural gas, diesel, fuel oil, coal; through refuse-delivered sources such as solids or biogas from landfills or purifiers and through biomass such as wood chips, agricultural and forestry waste.

The pros of cogeneration systems

The advantages of CHP can be grouped as follows:

  • First, it lowers the consumption of primary energy, since fuel can be used to produce both electricity and heat. The decrease in consumption is allegedly in the order of 35% – 40%.
  • Second, it lowers the emission of pollutants. In the perspective of carbon emissions, optimization of fuels results into a lower consumption of non-renewable sources. Every ton of fossil fuel we avoid burning stops carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere and reduces, partially, the problem of global warming.
  • Third, cogeneration technology is widely available and implementable, with further opportunities for development and refinement.
  • Last but not least, lower primary energy consumption means lower production expenses. In fact, in traditional heating systems, most of the energy produced by combustion (about 60%) is lost in the form of heat. Only the remaining part (30-35%) is actually used. In a cogeneration plant, however, this heat is recovered and converted again into thermo-electric energy ready for use.

Although the many valuable positive aspects, cogeneration systems reveal some tricky aspects. What are the challenges for software producers to adopt reliable solutions for control and monitoring? They will be accurately sifted in the next article.

Stay tuned!

Chile/ January 2020: BaxEnergy expands core operation in South-America

The opening of BaxEnergy’s first Branch Office in Chile strengthens the strategic partnership between the latter and EGP Chile, aiming to support the country towards the development of a sustainable environment and life in it.

In the last decade the Chilean Government has decided to act on the possibilities its territory offers, starting in 2013 with the emanation of Law 20.698. Also known as Law 20/25, the bill establishes that by 2020 at least 25% of commercialized energy must originate from renewable sources. More recently the country’s goal to mostly rely on renewable energies has been confirmed by Chilean Minister of Energy Juan Carlos Jobet whom, during the Madrid Climate Change Conference in December 2019, has declared to be planning to produce 70% of energy from renewable sources by 2030. Chile can brag a vast expansion of natural soil. By gliding over the country, a unique scenery manifests: aged glaciers, white salt planes, active volcanoes, lakes and the driest desert on earth. Not to mention its 4300 kilometers Pacific coastline. This geographical peculiarity grants the country the perfect conditions to rely on renewable energies, providing generous water supplies, good wind conditions and an impressive degree of solar radiation, especially in the Atacama desert.

With its expanding renewable energy pole, Enel Green Power Chile has been playing a pivotal point in the support of Chilean power transformation, together with the adoption of BaxEnergy’s turn-key solution Energy Studio Pro® for Data acquisition and storage for both real-time and historical trends to monitor and control wind, solar and hydro power plants in one intelligent platform.

BaxEnergy and EGP Chile collaboration dates as far back as 2014, year in which BaxEnergy implemented a control and monitoring room adapting them over the customer’s necessities. The process of customization, decided in Santiago during a 15 days span, consisted of an advanced “Human Machine Interface” (HMI) gathering and collecting large volumes of data coming from the power plants to turn it into intuitive information. The shared effort to accelerate Chile’s progress towards the almost exclusive use of renewable energy has been recently confirmed by both EGP Chile and BaxEnergy with the implementation and extension of Energy Studio Pro® based Local Monitor and Control Rooms for renewable power plants. The platform is equipped with Osisoft PI servers and other IoT devices in order to gather different data sources coming from the 16 power plants all over the country which produce 1GW power altogether. Energy Studio Pro® is equipped with a unique data presentation layer including web interface and reporting in order to make data uniform and intuitive to work with. Through Energy Studio Pro® customizable solutions, EGP Chile has been able to run its heterogeneous portfolio, setting custom alarms based on specific group of events such as high temperature, power disruption or devices inefficiency in order to have an instantaneous notification of failures and malfunctions, thus minimizing energy losses.

BaxEnergy has just reasserted its will to support the ambitious goal Chile has set for itself by opening its first headquarter in the country. Through the expansion in South-America, BaxEnergy is proud to sustain a country which is investing in renewable energy. Our effort is focused on developing state-of-the-art technology in order to facilitate the transition to renewables, by providing energy and saving it when it’s needed without destroying the world in which we live. “Working side-by-side with our Chilean colleagues has been a valuable experience in many ways. Professionally, the opportunity to support an evolving country in which renewable energy is taking more and more hold has been a pivotal point in the implementation and customization of EnergyStudio Pro®. The flexibility of our flagship software has been proved to be highly efficient to respond to our partner’s needs. Personally, on the other hand, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work in such a magical place as Chile is.” – Stefano Scrivo, BaxEnergy Solution and Service Manager
