BaxEnergy’s innovative solution Energy Studio Pro® enables utilities, independent power producers and O&M service providers to run their power plants more efficiently, minimizes their energy losses due to downtime and slow responses to outages, and increases the overall yields maximizing the return on investment.

Thanks to a revolutionary approach to wind measurement, the bundled BaxEnergy/ROMO Wind services allow customers to benefit from the exact wind data delivered by ROMO Wind’s measurement technology iSpin, achieving full wind turbine performance.

The problem with wind data collection is that conventional anemometers, mounted on the wind turbine nacelle behind the rotor, provide not much accurate wind measurement data because of the distortion created by the rotor and nacelle.

ROMO Wind’s iSpin system uses proven ultrasonic technology to measure the wind where it first hits the turbine – directly at the spinner. In this way, iSpin is able to measure parameters which previously had been extremely difficult or impossible to measure accurately. The iSpin wind measurements are not affected by terrain, wake effects or turbulence caused by the rotor.

The ESP®-iSpin package gives wind farm operators access to a variety of new ESP® functions, such as tracking power curve changes, monitoring yaw misalignment as well as improved performance monitoring and analytics possibilities.

The new insights that operators gain with the combination of ESP® and iSpin lead to:

  • Improved performance and monitoring through a whole new level of transparency of turbine data
  • Enhanced wind farm management for a longer life of wind turbines
  • Optimised preventative maintenance

The Italian company, with its headquarter in Rome, belongs to the EDF group and is one of the leading energy utilities in Italy. Being focused on wind energy first, EDF EN Italia started to expand its portfolio with photovoltaic power plants back in 2007. Since then, EDF EN Italia has been extending its photovoltaic sector enormously and is now improving the operations of its 59 photovoltaic power plants and 7 wind farms with Energy Studio Pro®, having a total installed capacity of 447 Megawatts across Italy, including Sardinia Island.

The challenge

The introduction of photovoltaic in 2007 and the growing number of various manufacturers led to numerous applications to be handled.

But after all, it is very important to be able to go into fine details, even of big installations, in order to detect failures and optimize production explains Emilia Visconti, Chief Technical Officer at EDF EN Italia. That is why EDF EN Italia saw a big advantage in reducing the amount of work and downtimes with a unique solution that allows to go deep inside power plants to ensure that costs are under control. Thus, EDF EN Italia began looking for a reliable partner to work with.

The decision

We heard about BaxEnergy and Energy Studio Pro® from our colleagues at EDF EN Portugal, who were already using the system for their wind farms and the feedback was very positive says Emilia Visconti, who points out that a very good cooperation started after contacting BaxEnergy in 2012. EDF EN Italia and BaxEnergy jointly defined how Energy Studio Pro® could be adapted to its individual needs.

The solution

Energy Studio Pro® was implemented in the monitoring room in Rome, where operators benefit, among other advantages, from long-term data archiving and predictive analysis.

Since the company uses BaxEnergy’s solution, EDF EN Italia has been constantly expanding its knowledge base. In the near future, EDF EN Italia is planning to integrate another wind farm into Energy Studio Pro® and is looking forward to further intensifying its strong collaboration with BaxEnergy.

In the hydro cab project BaxEnergy has improved real-time operational efficiency with central uniform visualization of data, real time key performance indicators and leveraging the automation. Remote control has also increased safety through many applications like monitoring status in unsupervised power plants, tracking vehicles and people performing on-site operations, observing the real state of the power plant in case of emergency and monitoring reactivation process of the turbines after a stop.

Battery storage could become a key technology for maximizing the utilization of renewable energy sources, reducing curtailment and improving power quality. In Catania BaxEnergy helped Enel Green Power realizing the first large scale battery storage project in Italy, building the monitoring system for first EGP’s project that stores electricity generated from the 10 MW photovoltaic power plant “Catania 1”.

In Ollagüe (Chile), Enel Green Power and BaxEnergy have created the world’s first energy system built at high altitude, combining a solar PV field, wind power and a solar co-generation plant, all connected to a an advanced storage system through a micro-grid. The project covers 85% of the electricity needs of the community ensuring energy independence and avoiding the annual consumption of 6 thousand liters of fuel previously used to power the diesel generator, assessing the effectiveness of a system that can become a transformational solution for other isolated communities around the globe.

The CEO of BaxEnergy concluded his speech addressing the importance of digitized assets and mobilize workforce to remotely access data main through secure, fast and encrypted connectivity, highlighting the significant impact of the smart technologies in opening new possibilities for O&M. Renzi Meets BaxEnergy in Chile

Region of Antofagasta/Chile, October 2015: the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi flies to Chile to attend the inauguration of the first largest renewable pole of Enel Green Power (EGP), where is set-up BaxEnergy monitoring and control room, already supervising Taltal windfarm, Lalackama I and II photovoltaic power plants, Ollagüe hybrid facility and Cerro Pabellón geothermal power plant.

During his State visit to Chile, Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, together with the Chilean Energy Minister Máximo Pacheco and the CEO of Enel Group Francesco Starace, has inaugurated the Enel Green Power’s largest renewable energy pole located in the region of Antofagasta. In the Country, the company operates already a capacity of more than 500 MW, monitored with Energy Studio Pro®. BaxEnergy’s turn-key solution helps EGP to efficiently manage its mixed portfolio of power plants by gathering under one roof wind, solar, geo and hybrid technologies as well as storage solutions.

“We have inaugurated the first geothermal plant in Latin America alongside the Taltal wind farm, solar PV fields and a hybrid facility. It is from a pioneering investment like this, with a high technological content, that we can open new frontiers in the energy sector,” said Matteo Renzi at the inaugural speech defining Enel “as an important and strategic company in Latin America, with a leading role in the renewable energy in this area of the world”.

The Chilean branch of EGP is playing a crucial role in helping the Country to reach “a diversification of its energy mix, in line with the government objectives”, as remarked by the Company CEO Francesco Starace who emphasized that “the wealth of Chile in terms of natural resource together with the Country’s institutional and regulatory stability, fits perfectly with Enel Green Power’s cross-technology profile”.

The EGP’s renewable pole, considered a district of renewable excellence, today includes four operational power plants: the Taltal windfarm, composed of 33 wind turbines for a total of 99 MW nominal power, capable of generating up to 300 GWh per year; the Lalackama I and II solar PV power plants, the largest solar complex in Chile, able to produce approximately 210 GWh per year; the Ollagüe hybrid system, which integrates the solar and wind energy with a storage system, and the Cerro Pabellón geothermal power plant – the first in the whole Latin America. This green hub is keeping on growing thanks to the constructions of new power plants such as the Diego de Almagro and Chañares solar power plants in the Atacama region.

Since 2014, EGP Chile relies on BaxEnergy’s advanced technological solutions for controlling and analysing renewable energy data, which are collected and stored in a local control room (LCR) implemented in the company’s headquarters in Santiago. BaxEnergy EGP Battery Storage Project

Catania/Italy, September 2015: BaxEnergy helps Enel Green Power realizing the first large battery storage project in Italy.

Battery storage could become a key technology for maximizing the utilization of renewable energy sources, reducing curtailment and improving power quality. In Italy, Enel Green Power (EGP), one of the World’s largest energy provider, has chosen BaxEnergy to build the monitoring system for its first project that stores electricity generated from the 10 MW photovoltaic power plant of  “Catania 1”.

The power plant employs a 2 MWh Durathon “sodium-metal halide” battery, developed by General Electric, to increase the power plant’s electricity flow and flexibility, and utilizes Energy Studio Pro® to supervise the delivery of power to the grid.

The project of Catania 1 represents a significant step forward for the green energy market, as the CEO of EGP Francesco Venturini remarked in his inaugural speech: “The active integration of renewables with pioneering and innovative solutions such as this one is key for the ongoing development of the sector”. The implementation of battery storage systems for certain renewable sources, such as solar or wind, allows to mitigate power generation imbalances due to the weather variability. According to Mr. Venturini, there is a great value in such kind of projects and “EGP can manage the unpredictability of solar power, thereby reducing intermittency and ensuring a higher stability and control of the grid”.

EGP is using BaxEnergy’s integrated software solution Energy Studio Pro® to monitor and analyze the battery storage system’s data as well as optimizing production plans. BaxEnergy provided a single data interface that integrates different services for scheduling and controlling energy production through battery storage system.

After the success of Catania 1 project, EGP has entrusted BaxEnergy with a similar project for the 18 MW wind farm “Potenza Pietragalla”, located in the southern Italian region of Basilicata, and equipped with a 2 MW/2MWh Samsung Lithium-Ion battery. The wind farm, ran by Energy Studio Pro®, is the first in Italy to be combined with a storage system and connected to the grid.
