BaxEnergy and Yokogawa collaborate to provide an Integrated Automation and Monitoring System for the first hybrid energy district in Europe

BaxEnergy, a leader in energy control and asset performance management, has joined forces with Yokogawa Italy, a subsidiary of Yokogawa Electric Corporation, to deliver an advanced automation and monitoring solution for the Baseload Power Hub, the first hybrid energy district in Europe.

Located within the Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind farm, this groundbreaking facility, developed by CrossWind a joint venture between Shell (80%) and Eneco (20%) – is set to redefine the concept of integrated RE sources management by converting surplus renewable energy into green hydrogen.

Positioned at 18.5 kilometers off the Dutch coast, the Baseload Power Hub taps into the power
of 69 offshore
wind turbines to generate green hydrogen via a megawatt-scale electrolyzer. To further stabilize output, the Hub also integrates floating PV and battery storage, overcoming the
variability of wind power. Hydrogen is then stored on-site and finally reconverted into electricity through fuel cells, providing a consistent, renewable power source for the grid.

At the core of this project, BaxEnergy and Yokogawa’s integrated systems establish a robust
energy control infrastructure that provides
stability, reliability, and operational efficiency for the Baseload Power Hub.

The automation system is managed through Yokogawa’s Collaborative Information Server (CI Server), capable of orchestrating industrial control systems, sensors, and artificial intelligence and integrating them into a unified platform.

This enables centralized supervision of the plant’s automation and safety controls, which include:

CENTUM VP Process Automation System: Ensures high-precision process control, enabling efficient hydrogen production.

ProSafe-RS Safety System: Provides advanced safety monitoring and management to maintain secure plant operations.

Plant Resource Manager (PRM): Delivers real-time asset performance data to optimize maintenance and reduce downtime.

Energy and control monitoring system by BaxEnergy: Monitors and manages the plant’s energy assets, providing actionable insights that support reliable energy storage and generation.

This partnership underscores a scalable “System of Systems” (SoS) approach, allowing the Baseload Power Hub to operate as a cohesive, high-performance plant.

Through this collaboration, BaxEnergy and Yokogawa established a model for increasing system availability and ensuring energy optimization, paving the way for similar offshore hydrogen projects that address both energy stability and decarbonization goals.
