Borusan EnBW Enerji will leverage data analysis to increase efficiency and optimize power plants production

The main challenge of owning and managing renewable energy assets consists of continuously improving the performance of power plants while ensuring their safe operation.

The main question is: how to make operations safer while ensuring optimal performance? It is needed to predict and to prevent failures in a timely manner. Therefore, it is essential to manage data across the enterprise efficiently.

Borusan EnBW Enerji: a continuously growing renewable energy portfolio

Since 2009, Borusan EnBW Enerji is the leading energy company in the Turkish wind energy sector with its portfolio composed exclusively of renewable energy resources. The overall mission for the company is to meet Turkey’s energy needs using renewable energy sources so as to contribute to the sustainable development and to reduce energy dependency.

Borusan EnBW Enerji decided to implement a data gathering and analysis system to improve its power plants performance.

Data Gathering and Analysis to Improve Power Plants Performance

BaxEnergy will provide Energy Studio Pro® top tier reports, alarms, dashboard and workflows to improve the company’s wind portfolio made up of 192 turbines in 9 wind parks, for an operational capacity of almost 667 MW.

The solution will allow to store the master data of each power plant and generation unit configured in the system, enabling Borusan EnBW Enerji’s team to obtain a detailed, real-time and historical based view of data.

Among other benefits, this will allow Borusan EnBW Enerji to “have a library of analysis ready to not spend years to do it” as Mahir Tosun said, Renewables Engineering Manager at Borusan EnBW Enerji

The project will include the implementation of several features and systems such as real-time asset monitoring, Extensibility Points, Security Management, Historical data analysis and trending and Asset Information System. As Veysi Sami Ünser, Business Continuity Manager said, “those functionalities will empower the team to reduce the costs of O&M, reduce energy losses from a wind turbine and reduce man hours to make analysis”.

Real-Time Asset Monitoring to keep everything in sight

BaxEnergy will provide Borusan EnBW Enerji with a Unified HMI with real-time data and with a GIS. This will enable the company to see current and future weather conditions thanks to the integration with meteorological data in real-time, visualizing on-site weather conditions and weather forecast to take decisions on how to schedule upcoming activities in the power plant, including scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.

In this way, the company will be able to have a complete real-time visualization of its entire wind portfolio.

Historical data analysis and trending

Energy Studio Pro® is equipped with a number of data analytics features which are designed to facilitate the troubleshooting of problems.

Through historical data analysis, the team at Borusan EnBW Enerji will be able to compare the production of different devices and different power plants, building the dashboard which better suits their needs.

The analysis of each wind turbine performance is enhanced thanks to the wind power curve module, which is compliant with IEC 61400-12 standard and supports multiple curves creation and comparison with sensors and temperature corrections.

This will enable to focus on root cause analysis in order to establish the reason for underperformance, as well as estimating the financial impact of low yields.

Custom reports and dashboard to grasp the right information at a glance

To keep everything under control, Borusan EnBW Enerji will have access to completely customizable reports and multiple calculation options for maximum precision. Reports will support to evaluate and compare power losses, and will comprehend data completeness and quality, availability, and efficiency.

The team of operators at Borusan EnBW Enerji will be able to plot, compare and analyze different signals from the same device or signal value trends from multiple devices, performing with ease advanced visual data analysis. Operators will be able to select a list of events of the assets within a certain period and visualize timeline of prioritized events, thus being able to make comparisons and rapidly check underperformances.

Circling back to the first question, by using Energy Studio Pro®, Borusan EnBW Enerji will have powerful tools at its disposal for a complete visualization and monitoring of what is going on in the assets both from a data analysis and an organizational point of view.
