H2TWIN: FROM SIMULATION TO REAL-TIME OPERATION

Wisnam has completed Deliverable D3.1, bringing the H2TWIN digital twin into real-time operation and officially concluding the project. The validation confirms that the platform can manage complex hybrid energy processes with stability and consistency, responding effectively to changing operating conditions.

Developed within the “Network 4 Energy Sustainable Transition” (NEST) program and funded by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) – NextGenerationEU, Deliverable D3.1 – Software on Real-Time Machine System demonstrates the ability of the digital twin to represent and control a multi-technology energy hub in a reliable and coherent manner.

A digital twin built to operate like a real plant

To evaluate its behavior under realistic conditions, the platform was deployed across six industrial real-time controllers, each dedicated to a specific subsystem: wind and solar generation, battery storage, electrolyzer, fuel cell, hydrogen sensors, and the grid Point of Interconnection. A central controller ensures consistent power delivery and orchestrates the interaction between the different technologies.

This architecture allows the digital twin to mirror real operational dynamics and physical constraints, enabling it to behave as an active system capable of adapting to rapid changes in energy conditions.

Consistent performance across operating scenarios

During the validation phase, the platform was tested under a variety of conditions, including high and low renewable availability, steady-state operation, and load variations. In each scenario, the system responded in a balanced and predictable way, maintaining battery State of Charge, hydrogen levels, and subsystem behavior within expected limits. The control logic operated smoothly, ensuring coordinated management of all components.

A project completed with all goals achieved

The successful completion of Deliverable D3.1 marks the full conclusion of the H2TWIN project, with all objectives achieved on schedule. The digital twin has demonstrated its operational readiness, showing a clear alignment between its design and real-time behavior. The project closes with a mature and reliable platform, capable of supporting complex hybrid energy scenarios in a flexible and sustainable way.
