Automazione e intelligenza artificiale: supporto all’analisi, non sostituzione

English version:
Scientific Visualization and AI for Astronomy: the ASTROVIEW Roadmap
A project led by IntelliSync that integrates advanced visualization technologies and artificial intelligence to facilitate the collaborative analysis of astronomical images.
Within the framework of the ICSC program, funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), the ASTROVIEW project aims to transform the way the scientific community explores and interprets images coming from the sky. Thanks to a cutting-edge digital platform, designed to be intuitive and accessible, the project seeks to simplify the annotation, search, and analysis of large volumes of visual data, integrating artificial intelligence methods that support astronomers’ work without replacing it.
An interface designed for those who study the sky
ASTROVIEW originates from the need to provide a digital tool capable of making the management of astronomical images more effective and immediate. The report on the state-of-the-art technological and scientific analysis defines the fundamental requirements for a flexible and accessible platform, addressed not only to IT experts but also to researchers and distributed working groups.
The system is designed as an interactive web application, offering a smooth and intuitive user experience through the use of advanced pre-processing techniques, such as the dynamic conversion of FITS images into PNG format and the integration of metadata in JSON format, which optimize the visualization and navigation of content. Among its main features, ASTROVIEW allows the creation of interactive mosaics, the annotation and filtering of images, similarity-based searches, and the comparison of multiple cutouts within a single session, thus fostering collaboration among members of the scientific community.
Automation and artificial intelligence: support for analysis, not replacement
A key element of ASTROVIEW is the integration of machine learning and deep learning models, developed to automate some of the most repetitive and demanding operations in image analysis. These models, trained on reference astronomical datasets, are able to provide preliminary classifications, identify visual anomalies, and group similar images based on morphological characteristics.
Interaction with these automated functions is always guided by the user, who maintains control and responsibility over scientific judgment. The objective is clearly to reduce the workload in the early stages of analysis, while at the same time increasing the quality and speed of astronomical investigations.
Particular attention is given to the physical consistency of the models, by integrating interpretable methods that respect the laws of observational physics, in order to ensure reliable and scientifically valid results.
Next steps and perspectives
The ASTROVIEW project is preparing to address the next phases through functional prototyping and experimentation on real use cases, thanks to the direct involvement of astronomers and data scientists. The platform will be modular and scalable, capable of adapting to multiple contexts, from academic research to the archiving of observational data, up to the educational domain.
A crucial aspect will be full compatibility with HPC (High Performance Computing) infrastructures and the possibility of integrating ASTROVIEW with other tools and databases, in order to create an interoperable and advanced working ecosystem.
The commitment of Intellisync and the project team is aimed at delivering a tool that is truly useful in everyday practice and that concretely contributes to making the analysis of astronomical data more accessible, reliable, and shareable.
